GOLD TYPES EXPLAINED
9k Gold - 37.5% gold
We occasionally carry VINTAGE 9k Gold items, as its not a common current jewelry material nowadays
10k Gold - 41.67% gold
Probably one of, if not THE most popular gold. Popular because its the most durable of the modern gold types, and is also cost effective. Note that 10k gold is not as "golden" as the higher karat golds.
12k Gold - 50% gold
Rarely seen, but occasionally used. We would love to see more 12k because of the increase in color, and amazing durability!
14k Gold - 58.33% gold
This alloy offers more resistance to wear and tear than either 18K or 22K. It’s ideal for everyday use and is the most popular choice for engagement rings and wedding bands. Its nearly as durable as 10k, but definitely a higher price.
18k Gold - 75% gold
This is the most traditional mix of gold and other metals. 18K pieces tend to have a deeper yellow tone than 14K. Because of the higher gold content in 18K pieces, it will also yield a higher price than 14K. 18k is still a very durable gold type.
20k Gold - 83.33% Gold
Another of the "not often seen" gold types.
22k Gold - 91.6% gold
Even a modest mixture of only 8% alloyed metal makes 22 karat gold a touch stronger and more durable than pure 24k gold. Nevertheless, care will need to be taken with this blend as it’s still the softest form of mixed metal jewelry. We rarely use any gold karat higher than 18k, especially for rings as they see the most abuse when worn. 22k and even 24k would be most suitable for pendants or earrings.
24k Gold - 99.9% gold
Being the highest karat of gold, it’s easy to assume that 24K is the “best” gold to buy, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Pure gold can be easily scratched and bent, so it’s impractical for daily wear (yet the most expensive). You wouldn’t want to do housework while wearing a set of 24K bracelets, but if you’re planning on attending a red-carpet event and want to make a statement, it might be another story.
Jamie Rose Jewelry typically uses 10k and 14k gold in our jewelry. It provides that beautiful golden look, is the most durable, and has the lowest price tags.
GOLD FILLED:
This is a process that originated in the United States, though it’s beginning to gain popularity overseas. It’s a way of giving a piece the appearance of gold without the expense.
When making a gold-filled piece, gold is pressure bonded to a base metal known as jeweler’s brass. This is a high-quality metal that is extremely resistant to wear and tear. Using high pressure and high heat, the gold is overlaid on top of the brass to give the appearance of authentic gold.
By law, a gold-filled piece must contain at least 5%, or 1/20, gold by weight. So if you see a jewelry piece described as being 12k gold-filled, it means that it is 12/20 gold-filled
Jamie Rose Jewelry LOVES to use gold filled in our jewelry, especially when introducing a new design. Its durable (with the expectation that it will last 10 years or longer with regular usage), looks exactly like solid gold, and allows us to utilize a cost-effective method to provide reasonable pricing!
GOLD PLATING - 0.05 microns of at least 10k gold
Gold-plated jewelry refers to jewelry that has gold plating at least 0.5 microns thick. It does not require sterling silver to be used as the base material, and usually uses a less valuable material at its core.
GOLD VERMEIL - 1 - 2.5 microns of at least 10k gold
To be considered Gold Vermeil, the piece must:
SILVER:
Fine Silver 99.9% Silver
Fine silver is 99.9% pure silver. In this form the metal is beautiful and suffers from minimal tarnish, but it's generally too soft and malleable for many uses, including making most silver jewelry.
Sterling Silver 92.5% Silver
Sterling Silver is Fine silver alloyed with copper, which is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. This percentage of fine silver is why you will often see sterling silver referred to as '925 silver' or hallmarked with a 925 stamp.
The copper makes the silver harder, more durable and therefore much better to work with and use, but without compromising on color. Most silver jewelry that you buy and wear will be sterling silver.
STAINLESS STEEL:
We love stainless steel in its inexpensive, sometimes utilitarian, always non-tarnishing, hypoallergenic (for most), silvery glory!
Stainless steel will stand the test of time, and allow anyone to wear a beautiful piece of jewelry, whether its a symbol of love, a rock and roll statement piece, or your every day wear!
TITANIUM:
Titanium is very resistant to bending, cracking and has good scratch resistance. Stone settings in titanium resist loosening very well. Titanium's high strength allows innovative and more delicate stone setting than traditional softer jewelry metals.
